STONEWORK

The fabric of Edinburgh’s historic buildings

Stonework

Many of Edinburgh’s historic buildings are built in sandstone.  Use of lime and sand are extensively used to bed and joint the stones.

Advanced Roofing understand the importance of using the proper techniques and materials to preserve Edinburgh’s heritage buildings.  We employ the most expert stonemasons and stone restorers to ensure a sympathetic and robust restoration is carried out.

We use Masons Mortar Ltd, Edinburgh as our main supplier of lime, aggregate and Lithomex stone repair products.  This allows us to colour match your existing stonework with Lithomex’s extensive colour choices to ensure an expert finish.

It is important that the correct materials are used when it comes to stonework to preserve the original stone.  Lime render is a recognised suitable product due to its ability to absorb moisture and release it.  This is necessary due to climatic conditions such as sun and wind.  Where applied correctly lime doesn’t shrink or crack providing a longer lifespan and effective weathertight finish.

We occasionally hear from clients that other contractors advise using cement to repoint stonework.  Cement destroys our wonderful stone buildings.  Never use cement on stonework as it shrinks leading to cracking as the stone cannot breathe.  Cement also causes the surrounding sandstone to erode faster due to water being trapped in the stone.  Using cement on stonework causes far more expensive problems down the line for the homeowner.

Stonework Maintenance

Stonework particularly chimneys and balustrades should be inspected on an annual basis.  Stonework that is out of eyesight is often neglected.  It is these neglected areas of stone that can begin to erode causing stonework to become loose and dangerous.  Advanced Roofing will inspect stonework as part of an annual inspection and report findings immediately to clients.  Scaffolding is then erected for health and safety purposes before submitting costs for necessary repairs.
